In August of 2022, Masha was unexpectedly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) which forced her to leave her dancing position in Russia and return home to California to endure chemotherapy treatments. During her treatment, Masha began creating gestural movement phrases as a form of expression and healing. These early explorations culminated in her first choreographic and performance art piece.
Since this performance, Masha periodically returns to her cancer diagnosis to discover new themes and ideas in the form of dance. She is a guest choreographer and teacher with the OncoBallet Foundation—bringing dance to cancer patients and survivors as an outlet for mental and physical healing.
